RMS (Railway Mail Service) is a part of Department of Posts India. Rail way Mail Service Offices are divided in to two. Those Rail way Mail Service offices situated in Railway Plat forms are named Railway Mail Service Office. Those are situated away from Railway Platform are named as Sorting Offices. However the work and the status of Rail way Mail Services office and Sorting offices are same. Generally we can name RMS offices as Rail way Mail Service Offices, irrespective of whether they are situated in Railway Plat form or away from Railway Platform.
India Post hire the Railway compartment for transporting Mail and the amount will be paid to Indian Railway. The reserved Rail way Mail Service train compartments are called sections.

Some RMS offices are recently renamed as Mail Business Centers but theactual work in MBC (Mail Business Center) is the same as RMS office.
Nomenclature of RMS Divisions
All the RMS Divisions in India are named with two letters showing the region in which the RMS divisions are situated.
eg:- RMS 'TV' Division --- Means the division is in Trivandrum.
RMS 'EK' Division --- Means the division is in Eranakulam.
RMS 'CT' Division --- Means the division is in Calicut.
Administrative- hierarchy
All the RMS offices in every states (Circles) are under the control of the Superintendent of RMS (SRM) (eg:- Superintendent of RMS 'EK' Division. The Superintendent is under the administrative control of Regional Post Master Genaral (PMG). All the Regional PMGs are under the administrative control of Chief Post master Generals (CPMG). In all Circles (States) there will be one CPMG.
eg:- CPMG Kerala Circle.
CPMG Maharashtra Circle.
